Rescue and recovery is challenging in and of itself, but even more so within the state of Alaska. Over the years, we have proudly assisted Alaska's only horse rescue-Alaska Equine Rescue. Alaska Equine Rescue (AER) is an all volunteer organization, with full 501 (3) c status. AER has been an invaluable resource to the entire state for over 15 years, aiding horses in distress, helping agencies with education and resources and providing that "helping hand" during a crises. For this reason, we make sure that there is "room at the inn" for any horse AER needs to foster-and they are welcome to use our horse trailer when needed. In many situations, the horses they take in are in critical condition, and require veterinary attention immediately. Once evaluated, they can then be placed in an appropriate foster home until such time as they are recovered and then adopted. Please take a moment to visit the Alaska Equine Rescue website and learn more about the challenges of rescue here in Alaska. Each spring, you will find us at the annual auction-a fundraiser that AER organizes-*the* place to be, and for a great cause too! Pictured below is an aged TB gelding, a prior dressage competitor of some note. He was picked up at a condition score of about 2.5-which the picture does not adequately convey-that is quite the winter coat he has! In just six weeks (at temperatures dropping to -30) we brought up his weight to a 4.5 with the aid of a carefully managed diet which included three warm mashes a day. He went on to serve as a walk trot mount for another four years, finally succumbing to old age at 29.
We have gone on to help out a number of horses over the years, and are positively delighted to do so. These needy seniors really tug at our heart strings! For more information about diet, recovery, and rescue-please do check out the links page. Or, if you have a horse who needs a remedial diet, and just need some advice or assistance, do contact us. We offer recovery boarding on a case by case basis, and all inquiries are kept confidential.
